My lab supports two projects connected under the umbrella of growth regulation of horticultural crops.
1) Vegetative propagation of difficult woody species. For several years, we have been working with clonal rootstocks of cherry and pear, as well as varieties of hazelnut. Within these species are clones with limited potential for efficient propagation.
2) Use of developmental mutants of pea to study plant growth. Over the years, we have worked with alt, a thiamine mutant and le, na and sln, which alter gibberellin metabolism and stem growth. Presently, we are focusing on Np, neoplastic pod in collaboration with Dr. Bob Doss, USDA Horticultural Crops Research Lab, Corvallis, and Dr. Jim Oliver, USDA, Beltsville. This resulted in the discovery of a group of insect-derived mitogens that we named "bruchins."

Current Personnel:

Luigi Meneghelli: Faculty Research Assistant. B.S. Ohio State University, 1993. M.S. Oregon State University, 2002.

Luigi is responsible for our propagation program. This involves managing the stock plants, mist facilities and greenhouse space, as well as the tissue culture facilities. The guidelines for propagating softwood cuttings of cherry and pear resulted from this program.

Tissue culture occupies an increasing proportion of his effort. Many of the clonal rootstocks of cherry and pear, as well as Corylus, are difficult to micropropagate. Luigi found that double-phase culture is a useful tool for growing these difficult clones. He has also developed a regeneration system for cherry and is currently attempting to genetically transform rootstock clones.
