Research Interests
I conduct and coordinate research in tree fruit and hazelnut production and physiology. My research has both adaptive and reductionist components. One current area of focus is on alternative orchard floor management systems (AOFMS) for integrated and organic production systems of sweet cherry. Research areas specific to this theme currently include quantifying the impacts of AOFMS on soil biology, root growth, nitrogen cycling and overall tree performance. Future areas will include quantifying the expression of the nitrate uptake genes in orchard cropping systems. Another area of emphasis is the floral biology of hazelnut, in particular, the prediction of bloom, morphological description and molecular markers associated with particular phenological stages. My adaptive research seeks to identify suitable advanced hazelnut, sweet cherry, and apple selections and rootstocks for use in the Pacific Northwest. I have generated $772,336 for research and teaching support in the past 10 years for these programs.
In horticulture, I have directed 9 graduate programs resulting in advanced degrees, served on 25 graduate committees, and been the graduate school representative on 8 committees.

Courses Taught
In support of the undergraduate Horticulture curriculum, I teach a tree fruit and nut production and physiology course, and co-teach an introductory course in berries, grapes, tree fruits and nuts. I co-administer, advise and teach courses in the undergraduate, interdisciplinary BioResource Research (BRR) major. This interdisciplinary major offers a unique experiential learning opportunity where students develop and implement their own research project in collaboration with a research faculty member. Their project culminates in and undergraduate thesis and seminar. In addition to advising these students on research opportunities, I also teach a course in data presentation, and organize and facilitate mentor participation in the Great Experiments in BioResource Science class and a seminar course. Approximately, 45 students are enrolled in this major annually. Within the BRR major, I have served on 35 undergraduate thesis committees.
